Day Trips

Lost Dutchman State Park, a Superstition Mountains day trip.

The Superstition Mountains rise sharply out of the desert east of the Valley, and Lost Dutchman State Park sits right at their foot. It is the easiest way to see them up close, with short desert walks for everyone and one very hard climb for the ambitious.

Choosing a hike

  • •For everyone: the short loops near the visitor center give big mountain views on gentle ground.
  • •For very fit hikers: Siphon Draw climbs steeply toward the Flatiron. Park maps describe a long, demanding day, and the trail is not maintained past the basin. Check the current detour.
  • •Be prepared: Carry more water than you think you need, start early, wear sturdy shoes and a hat, and turn back if anyone in the group is struggling.

Planning the day

Leave early, hike in the cool of the morning, and be back at the house for the afternoon. Paradise Reserve has six bedrooms for up to 16 guests, five of them king suites with their own bathroom, plus a pool and spa, a golf simulator, a putting green and a pickleball court. Events and parties are not permitted at the house, and quiet hours apply. For other trips, see Saguaro Lake and a Fountain Hills day trip.
