Food & Nights Out

Hiking near North Scottsdale.

The desert around North Scottsdale is one of the best places in the valley to walk. The trails climb into the foothills, the views open up fast, and most of the good hikes are a short drive from the house. The trick with a group is picking a route that works for the slowest walker, and starting before the heat does.

Where to walk

Pinnacle Peak is the landmark most visitors see from the road. Its trail climbs steeply for a stretch, then rewards the walker with wide views over North Scottsdale. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a much larger network of trails, with options for a short stroll or a full morning.

Pick the trail before you leave, and check its current status with the City of Scottsdale Parks and Recreation department. Trails close for maintenance and after heavy rain.

Choose a route for mixed fitness

  • •Short and easy: a short loop, for guests who want the views without a steep climb.
  • •Out and back: walk as far as the group can go, then turn around. Faster walkers can keep going and meet the rest at the trailhead.
  • •Full morning: a longer climb for the strongest walkers. Check the elevation gain on the trail map before you start, and pick a route your slowest guest can finish.

Agree on a meeting point and a time to turn around before the group leaves the car park.

Heat and water

Afternoons from June to September regularly pass 100°F, so a summer hike is a sunrise hike. Even in the cooler months, the sun is strong at altitude. Carry more water than you think you need, wear a hat and sun protection, and turn back early if anyone is struggling.

Planning for a group that includes older guests or young children? Pick a shorter loop and build in rest stops.

Make the hike part of the day

A morning hike followed by a late breakfast or a pool afternoon is an easy way to fill a day. For a group that spans three generations, see our family reunion guide, which plans the day around different walking speeds.
