Things to Do

Hiking Camelback Mountain: what a group should know.

Camelback is the most famous hike in the Phoenix area, and the summit view is worth it. It is also a genuinely hard climb, with steep rock, handrails in places and very little shade. Before a group sets out, it helps to know what the city itself says about it.

Is it right for your group?

  • •For fit, experienced hikers: go at sunrise in the cooler months, with more water than you think you need.
  • •Parking: spaces are limited and towing is enforced. A rideshare drop-off is often easier.
  • •For mixed groups: the trails near North Scottsdale are easier and closer. See the Pinnacle Peak trail and the Gateway Loop.
  • •Be prepared: Carry more water than you think you need, start early, wear sturdy shoes and a hat, and turn back if anyone in the group is struggling.
