Pickleball at a Scottsdale house rental.

Pickleball is the easiest sport to bring a mixed group into. Beginners can rally in minutes, and the strong players can still get a real workout. A house with its own court turns a pickleball weekend into a tournament you can run in your own backyard, at the times you choose.

Why a private court beats booking a public one

Public courts in busy areas fill up on weekends, and a group of players who want to rotate partners can end up waiting. A court you have to yourself means the games start when you are ready, and nobody has to leave early to free up a spot.

It also keeps the group together. Players can warm up, play, rest and swim without a drive between each one.

What to ask before you book

Ask the host these questions before you commit, and put the answers in your booking confirmation:

  • •Are paddles and balls provided? Ask how many paddles are on site and whether they are in good condition. Bring a spare set of balls if you can.
  • •What is the court surface like? Ask about the surface and any wear, so you know whether to bring court shoes with good grip.
  • •Can the court be used at night? Ask about lighting. Quiet hours apply at the house, so plan late games around them.
  • •Is there shade nearby? Ask where players can sit between games, especially for guests who are not playing.

Run a round-robin for a group

A round-robin works best for mixed ability levels. Pair players by ability, rotate partners after every game, and keep a simple score sheet on the table. Stronger players can take a handicap, such as starting at a lower score, so the games stay close.

Give every player the same number of games, and finish with a short final so the group has something to talk about at dinner.

Play early or late in the summer

Afternoons from June to September regularly pass 100°F in Scottsdale. Schedule the games for early morning or after the sun drops, and use the pool or spa in the middle of the day. For the other seasons, the courts are comfortable most of the day.
